Lea Perella, Cocoon, mixed media installation, 1' x 1' x 2.5'
Lea Perella is a cinematographer and lighting designer that has embraced her sculpture roots and love of horror special effects to integrate into new installation work. Each of her pieces are miniatures created for films to be incorporated into a larger installation project.
“My pieces convey specific emotional states through the use of these mediums and transfer those emotions to the viewer. Making my artwork felt as well as seen causes a more intimate interaction between the audience and the art- creating the tension of a voyeur/ exhibitionist relationship. I explore the interaction of shadow and light within myself and the blurred area of what defines “sin”- something neither good nor evil but always deviant. The works have a dark and almost uncomfortable element to them, tapping into emotions usually pushed to our subconscious shadow. Revealing these emotions to the light has a profound effect of release and integration within the spirit. I have taken my survival skills and applied them to my dark creations- the female forms are in different states of transformation and distress. Exploring the perverseness of my inner dualities by bringing my dark half into the light and giving it a voice- however ugly it may seem- contains the beauty that makes me whole.”
